THE PROBLEM

Sports interest us because we want to watch people perform beyond what the majority of us consider to be possible. The problem with this desire is that we have also been led to believe that anyone who can do this must be using some type of prohibited substances. We, as well as other athletes in the sport immediately assume that there is an artificial component to the performance of great athletes. This type of speculation has persistently followed Lance Armstrong throughout his career, although there has never been any proof.

Claudia Pechstein is a German speed skater who has been winning medals consistently since 1994. She is the holder of 5 Olympic gold medals, as well as 48 other medals from the Olympics, the World Championships and the European Championships in the last 16 years. After the World Championships in 2009, she was accused of blood doping and subsequently banned from competition for two years. This ban came as a result of abnormal levels of red blood cells, even though no performance enhancing substances were ever found in any of her repeated tests. Claudia said that she was innocent and that she would appeal her case to the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland. She was not allowed to compete in the Winter Olympics in Vancouver by the Federal Supreme Court or by the Court of Arbitration for Sport and the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland have already said, before the hearing, that her appeal will probably fail. Yesterday, Gerhard Ehninger, the director of the German Society for Hematology and Oncology, announced that an evaluation of her case shows that she has a mild form of spherocytosis, a type of anemia which she apparently inherited from her father. Defects in the red blood cells cause them to deteriorate faster than they normally would, which the body responds to by increasing production of red blood cells, which was the cause of her abnormal tests. This woman’s career has probably been ruined by the stupidity of everyone involved, at the International Skating Union, CAS and the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland. If the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland denies her appeal, there is also the possibility that she could lose her job with the German Federal Police.
I do not think that there are genetic reasons for every case, but the possibility exists that there are natural explanations for some of the inconsistencies and therefore the premise in sport of guilty until you can prove that you are innocent is utterly ridiculous.

No creo que haya razones genéticas para cada caso, pero existe la posibilidad de que haya una explicación natural para algunas de las incoherencias y por lo tanto la premisa en el deporte de culpabilidad hasta que se pueda demostrar que son inocentes es totalmente ridícula.
