Is Kolelinia the future?

Bulgarian architect Martin Angelov has presented his idea (Kolelinia) for connecting bike lanes, so that the cyclists don’t have to ride in traffic to get from one bike lane to another. He has also suggested that they could be used for tourist routes or even longer cycle lanes. We definitely don’t have enough bicycle lanes here in Madrid and the ones we do have are not designed with anything more than recreation in mind, but riding my bicycle on a system of cables and a track for the wheel 4.5 meters above the ground does not seem like the answer to me. Even though the system proposes a safety harness for the cyclist, what happens if they fall off their bicycle for some reason? Do they just hang around until they are rescued by someone? How does one pass a slower cyclist? What happens if a cyclist has a medical emergency? It does solve the problem of providing bike lanes in areas where it is impossible to provide them at ground level, but it raises a lot of other issues which are more difficult to solve.


El arquitecto búlgaro Martin Angelov ha presentado una idea (Kolelinia) para conectar carriles-bici, para que los ciclistas no tengan que atravesar todo el tráfico para ir de un carril a otro. Ha sugerido también que podrían usarse como rutas turísticas o incluso vías ciclistas mas largas. Definitivamente no hay suficientes carriles-bici aquí en Madrid y los que tenemos, no han sido diseñados mas que para recreo, pero montar la bici en un sistema de cables y una pista para la rueda 4.5 metros por encima del suelo no me parece la respuesta. Ni incluso si el sistema propone un arnés de seguridad para el ciclista, ¿Qué pasa si se caen de la bici por alguna razón? ¿Simplemente permanecen colgados hasta que alguien les recoja? ¿Cómo se pasa a un ciclista más lento? ¿Qué pasa si el ciclista tiene una emergencia médica? Esto soluciona el problema de colocar carriles-bici en zonas donde es imposible hacerlo a nivel de tierra, pero plantea muchas otras cuestiones que son más difíciles de resolver.
