Barro to Puerto de San Glorio

Under cloudy skies I left this morning to ride to Potes and then climb the Puerto de San Glorio. In the first 21 kms there is quite a bit of traffic until you reach the AS 343 where there is virtually no traffic for 25 kms until you reach Panes, where there is fairly heavy traffic for 25 kms to Potes. After passing through Potes, there is very little traffic again for the 26.7 kilometers of climbing to reach the summit of Puerto de San Glorio. The first 10 kilometers of the climb are very easy and may give you the feeling that this climb will be much easier than you originally thought, but after that it becomes an almost constant 7% climb for the next 16.7 kilometers.  This is not an extremely difficult climb but there are times when it seems like it may never end. The views from the summit are fantastic when it is not enveloped in fog or clouds, it is worth the effort on a sunny day.

  1. It looks like you're having fun out there in the Picos de Europa today. I love it there. I still wonder though at the people I've seen riding their bikes on the Ruta del Cares. Hope everything's ok . . . Steven
