Panes to Jito de Escarandi
This afternoon I went for a ride with Francis, his son Victor, Yeyo and a couple more of their friends. We all met in Panes to ride to Poncebos and climb the Jito de Escarandi. The ride from Panes to Arenas de Cabrales is quite easy with a few rolling hills in the river gorge and then a little bit of climbing to reach Poncebos where the real climb begins. As you can see on the profile the first four kilometers are fairly difficult with ramps between 12 and 15%, after which the climb is quite pleasant for the next 6.5 kilometers or so until you almost reach Sotres. Before you arrive in Sotres, you are first faced with approximately 500 meters of climbing with grades between 15 and 17%, after which there is a short rest before you are faced with a little more than a kilometer with grades between 15 and 21 % to finish the difficult climbing. This is a very challenging climb and I probably would have been much more comfortable with a chainring somewhat smaller than the 40 tooth one that I have on the bike. Videos will be posted next week.
