Anillo Verde, Madrid

This morning I went out under the beautiful brown winter sky in Madrid to ride part of the Anillo Verde cycling path. This path was completed a few years ago at a cost of over 52 million euros (approximately 809,968.85 euros per kilometer) and has since then been destroyed, repaired, diverted or neglected by the city and various other entities. Unlike other cities, such as Zaragoza or Barcelona where the people clearly understand the signs, here in Madrid the markings for the bicycle and pedestrian lanes are confusing, at least the people don't seem to understand them (see photos). Today being a Tuesday, it wasn't so bad, but on the weekends a cyclist spends all his time avoiding pedestrians, dogs with or without leashes and their owners. However as you pass Parque Lineal de Palomeras, although it has improved, the project that started months ago continues, so there are fences, machinery and dirt and objects on the path. After passing this, you come to a popular spot that is well hidden, for the morning coffee and smoke break (see video), which occasionally occupies the whole path. Now you are approaching the most beautiful part of the route, now that they have cleaned up the leak from the water treatment center, where you can see all the garbage that the people living there throw onto the street every day (see photo). Here we also have a construction project run by Union Fenosa, that has also been going on for months because apparently no one works there, where they have repaired some parts of the path but not others (see photo). It is a shame that we have so much money to spend on entertaining Olympic dreams but not enough to maintain the cycle path that we spent 52 million euros to construct.

Esta mañana he ido bajo el bonito cielo marrón de invierno de Madrid para hacer parte del Anillo Verde. Este camino fue terminado hace unos años con un coste de aproximadamente 52 millones de euros (809968 euros/Km) desde entonces ha sido destruido, reparado, desviado o descuidado por el ayuntamiento y otras varias entidades. Al contrario que otras ciudades como Zaragoza o Barcelona donde la gente entiende claramente las señales, aquí en Madrid las marcas para peatones y ciclistas estan confusas, al menos la gente no parece entenderlas (ver fotos). Hoy siendo martes no estaba tan mal pero en los fines de semana, los ciclistas estan todo el tiempo esquivando peatones, perros con o sin correas y sus dueños. Sin embargo, cuando pasas el Parque Lineal de Palomeras, aunque ha mejorado, la obra que comenzó hace meses continua, así que hay vallas, maquinaria y suciedad y objetos en el camino. Después de pasar esto llegas a un punto muy popular, que esta bien escondido para el cafe de la mañana y la parada para el cigarrito (ver video), que algunas veces ocupa todo el camino. Ahora te estás acercando a la parte mas bonita de la ruta, ahora que han limpiado lo que salía de la planta de tratamiento de agua, donde puedes ver toda la basura que la gente que vive allí tiran a la calle cada día (ver foto). Aquí hay una obra de Unión Fenosa que también lleva meses porque parece que nadie trabaja allí, donde han reparado algunas partes del camino, pero no otras (ver foto). Es una verguenza que tengamos tanto dinero par gastar en sueños olímpicos pero no suficiente para mantener el Anillo Verde que costó 52 millones de euros construir.
