El Pielago

Today I drove from Madrid to Nombela to start my ride which included the ascent of El Pielago (1221 m) in the province of Toledo. The weather was excellent, warm enough that you didn't need a jacket and not too hot for climbing. The ride was 86.05 kms, which is all on good roads with not much traffic. The route consists of rolling hills when you are not climbing El Pielago, but is fast and mostly smooth, almost always bordered by trees giving you the sensation that you are riding through the forest. The most difficult part of this climb for me was passing through Real de San Vicente where it is steeper and the road is a bit rougher. Once you pass through the town you make a left hand turn to climb the remaining 7 kms to the summit, on a good road with little traffic except for the people out gathering chestnuts at this time of year. The descent to Navamorcuende is rapid, passing by the ruins of a Carmelite convent (see photo) with the occasional cow being the only problem that I encountered. The second photo is a view of the church in Navamorcuende as you arrive in town. The descent continues until you make the turn to Almendral de la Cañada and begin riding through the rolling hills again on the return to Nombela. A very nice short route with enough climbing to make it challenging.

Hoy he ido conduciendo de Madrid a Nombela para comenzar mi ruta que incluía la subida al Pielago (1221 m) en la provincia de Toledo. El tiempo era estupendo, suficientemente cálido para no necesitar chaqueta y no demasiado para escalar. La ruta fue 86.05 km, todo por buenas carreteras sin mucho tráfico. La ruta consiste en repechos cuando no se esta subiendo El Pielago, bastante rápido y mayoritariamente suave, casi siempre bordeado por árboles dándote la sensación de que estás pasando por un bosque. La parte mas difícil de esta subida para mi fue pasar a través de Real de San Vicente, donde hay más pendiente y la carretera tenia bastantes baches. Una vez que pasas el pueblo tuerces a la izquierda para subir los restantes 7 km hasta la cima en una buena carretera con poco tráfico excepto por la gente que recogían castañas en esta época del año. El descenso a Navamorcuende es rápido, pasando por las ruinas de un convento carmelita (ver foto) con alguna vaca ocasional, siendo éste el único problema que he encontrado. La segunda foto es una vista de la iglesia de Navamorcuende cuando llegas al pueblo. El descenso continua hasta que tuerces hacia Almendral de la Cañada y empiezas a pasar mas repechos de vuelta a Nombela. Un bonita y corta ruta con suficiente subida para que sea un reto.
